Osart Gallery was established in 2008 by Andrea Sirio Ortolani. From the outset, it has carved out its own path, with special emphasis on the most significant artistic experiences of the 1960s and 1970s. It has showcased the leading figures of Conceptual Art and explored the artistic languages of Body Art, Kinetic Art and photography, without neglecting, however, to consider painting from the second half of the 20th century.

Osart has forged important bonds with numerous artists, both Italian and foreign, including Vincenzo Agnetti, Amelia Etlinger, Piero Fogliati, Ruth Ann Fredenthal, Claudio Olivieri, Winston Roeth and Phil Sims. A gallery in search of new talents from the start, it was able to grasp early on the importance, later confirmed by international success, of artists such as Titus Kaphar, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and Hayv Kahraman, already exhibited by Osart in 2009-2010.

The gallery is currently engaged in an in-depth exploration of the emerging African scene, which began with the group exhibitions African Textures (2019-2020), with works by Marlene Steyn, Jeanne Gaigher and Kresiah Mukwazhi, and African Characters (2020), with works by Kate Gottgens, Kudzanai-Violet Hwami, Neo Matloga, Richard Mudariki and Gareth Nyandoro. Today, it alternates between solo and group exhibitions featuring both the great artists of the Second Avant-Garde and emerging artists on the international scene.

In conversation with Andrea Sirio Ortolani, Osart Gallery

Tell us about your background.

I have an academic background in economics, followed by some experience in consultancy firms and investment banks: I started out from a totally different planet. The decision to change sector was due to the fortunate coincidence of having got to know the art world in the best possible way – that is, living it day by day from a privileged perspective.

How did your journey into art begin?

My journey in art began in the most natural way as it has been a family concern for several generations: my grandfather was Peppino Palazzoli, founder of Galleria Blu; my mother is Daniela Palazzoli, curator and art historian. I was lucky enough to transform what was a great passion into a profession.

What are the main challenges you face in your work?

The biggest challenge is creating projects that satisfy my curiosity and then managing to transmit them to the public. My daily memo is to be able to combine the creative part, which is definitely the most exciting part, with the organizational and self-sufficiency part of the gallery.

What are the criteria for selecting the artists you represent?

The selection is made through very meticulous scouting and studio visits that allow me to further explore the work of the artists, to understand their personalities, because when you decide to take a common path, you need to find a strong affinity both on a professional and human level.

Are you a collector?

Absolutely. Passion and curiosity form the basis of our work and are therefore unstoppable. They go beyond pure professional activity. To fully satisfy them, it is natural and instinctive that we constantly seek to make discoveries through the work of colleagues and artists.
