T293 was founded in 2002 in an ancient building in the heart of the historical center of Naples, on Via dei Tribunali 293. The gallery has always been keenly aware of the latest trends in art, both experimental and conceptually relevant to the contemporary dialogue. Initially, the space was conceived to support up-and-coming artists, but in 2006, T293 changed its organizational structure. It became a commercial gallery under the management of Paola Guadagnino and Marco Altavilla. With the new organization, new goals were set, broadening the gallery’s view toward a more open approach to the global scene and a bolder curatorial strategy.

In 2010, with the firm intention of respecting its origins while maintaining its international status, T293 decided to open its headquarters in Rome. The intention was to become a point of reference in both the national and international contemporary art sectors.

With the aim of actively helping to develop contemporary art and visual culture through different generations of artists, T293 always presents what it deems to be excellence in the art sector. This is achieved not only through its extremely varied series of exhibitions, but also by actively supporting projects and publications that serve as catalysts in developing new ways of seeing and contextualizing contemporary art.

“I’m fascinated by the risk of new choices and the challenge related to the crucial phase of consolidating those choices on the international market.”
Paola Guadagnino, owner of the T293 Gallery, Rome

In conversation with Paola Guadagnino, T293 Gallery

The gallery doesn’t bear your name. Tell us how it came into being.

The T293 gallery doesn’t bear my name because I wanted to create a space that went beyond my personal identity, a place where art could speak for itself without being connected to one single individual. The first location was an apartment on Via dei Tribunali 293 in Naples, which gave the gallery its name.

Tell us about the space you chose for your gallery and the area around it.

I chose a renovated industrial space in the heart of Rome to create contrast and an interaction between contemporary art and the surrounding urban architecture, offering a unique setting for the works on exhibit.

What direction is contemporary art taking? And is it in step with the times?

Contemporary art is exploring new frontiers, delving into increasingly topical and pressing social and political issues. And it’s proving to be in step with the times and constantly evolving. We’re proud to be an active lively antenna that can transmit these issues.

What value does the art exhibited in galleries offer contemporary society? What is the gallerist’s role in Italy today?

One of the gallerist’s various roles is definitely research. I’m fascinated by the risk of new choices and the challenge related to the crucial phase of consolidating those choices on the international market.

The most complicated, successful and happy moment in your career to date?

The most difficult moment was probably the beginning, but the knowledge acquired over time has helped us to overcome any difficulties. To this day, each installation still represents a highly emotional and happy moment.
