The A22 Motorway (Autostrada del Brennero in Italian) runs from Modena to the Brenner Pass, cutting vertically through all of northern Italy.

Pietro Porcinai’s visionary plan for harmonising the A22 with its natural surroundings was extraordinary for its originality and completeness. Called upon to heal this deep wound, it organises and shapes the vision of the landscape from the Po Valley to the Dolomites, harmonising the motorway with the natural environment, preserving and enhancing the beauty of the area with special guardrails made of Corten in a rust-like hue that recalls the wood of an endless rural fence, creating an almost sculptural effect.
The sensitivity of the plan for the A22 motorway remains a model for valorising the landscape and how it can be preserved maintaining continuity between flora, colour and line.
