Brianza is one of the most densely populated geographical areas in Europe. Not corresponding to a single territorial entity, the different municipalities scattered over its territory belong to the provinces of Como, Lecco, Monza and, in small part, to the Metropolitan City of Milan.
Although its boundaries are undefined, traditional borders exist, based on geographical, social and cultural characteristics. Having always been characterized by a strong presence of furniture factories and design companies, its excellence in this field was already recognized in the 19th century. It is said that a local craftsman made a bed for a French colonel living in Milan during the Napoleonic occupation, who was tired of sleeping with his feet dangling because his bed was too small. His new bed was so comfortable and sturdy that word spread, and demand grew.
Between 1938 and 1941, Carlo Emilio Gadda published his unfinished novel La cognizione del dolore (The Experience of Pain) in the magazine Letteratura, in which Brianza, with its lands and its manias, serves as a backdrop. In December 2020, Alessandro Agudio inaugurated his third solo exhibition at our gallery, entitled Residence Acquario, in which he portrayed the details of the interior of his parents’ home and the landscape that Gadda describes in his novel.
