The Osteria del Carcere is located in San Gimignano, not far from a former maximum security prison. It’s a cozy little place that doesn’t serve pasta, grilled meats or ice cream, but cheeses, cured meats, salads, soups made from ancient recipes and homemade cakes: all of a stellar quality!
This little place was the wine cellar for Etel Adnan (as well as many other artists, including Daniel Buren, Anish Kapoor, and Pascale Marthine Tayou) when we organized her exhibition in San Gimignano. Etel Adnan, with over ninety years’ worth of countless experiences behind her, considers the Osteria del Carcere to be one of her favorite restaurants. Even today, whenever I see her, she asks me about Elena, the tavern’s owner.
